The Enablers research is an important complement and continuation from our 2022 Barriers report.

Commissioned by the UK Department for Science Innovation and Technology, the research’s aim is to identify what enables the retention and progression of ethnically underrepresented groups in the technology industry.

This is of particular moral and economic importance considering the context of the global challenges tech companies operate within. In 2022 we found more than 60% of Black professionals experienced barriers to entering the sector. In addition, more than a quarter (30%) expressed concerns about being their true selves; they linked authenticity with a lower likelihood of progression. In 2023 we surveyed, interviewed, and listened to tech workers to understand what would enable better engagement and representation, particularly at more senior levels.

We have captured their insights, voices, and experiences under the six enabler themes of: retention, progression, compensation, discrimination, organizational actions and going forward.

Key Insights Covered

Retention
Progression
Compensation
Discrimination
Organizational Actions
Going Forward
